Dallas Mavericks Coach Rick Carlisle Discusses Luka Doncic Progress, “Load Management” And Young Roster Depth
During one of many to come practice sessions this season, Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle responded to questions surrounding the “load management” of his young upcoming 2019-20 roster, and how to utilize the depth that has been bestowed upon him this season.
One solid question asked revolved around what the next step for versatile shooting guard Luka Doncic may be in his growth as a young future NBA star.
“He’s gonna be better this year just because he’s got a year under his belt. He had an amazing Summer of preparation, which he didn’t have last year. Last Summer was really about rest for him, coming off of the multiple European Championships and all the high frequency games. Just having that year of experience under his belt is gonna be a big plus!”
Another question asked pertained to newly acquired big man, Boban Marjanovic, and coach Carlisle had nothing but compliments towards him after the first week of interactions.“He’s a terrific basketball player… he’s got a great feel for the game. A force on the inside. He’s a weapon for us.”. Coach Carlisle also included some insightful words towards the personality of the 7 foot 3 inch Marjanovic:“He’s got a very positive outlook on life, from what I see. He’s a happy guy, loves to play. I know he’s a family guy. The things that I’ve seen from him ever since he got here is he just loves being on the court, working on his game. He’ll go play 1 on 1 against the interns, he doesn’t care who he’s playing against. He wants to be out there playing, he’s great!”
When referencing the management of player minutes and roster depth, coach Carlisle made it very apparent that extensive minute accumulation was not something he foresees happening often. “One of the reasons now that we need to build a deep roster is so that… hopefully, you don’t have any – too many players averaging more than 30 minutes. Ya know… if you keep guys’ minutes reasonable, then back-to-backs aren’t that big a deal.”
