Dallas Mavericks head Coach Rick Carlisle talks first rounder Luka Doncic.

After the Atlanta Hawks drafted Luka Doncic with the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks for the fifth overall selection, Trae Young, and a future first-round pick.

With the 19-year-old Slovenian officially as a Dallas Maverick, Rick Carlisle said he is “really excited.”  The Mavericks head coach praised his ability to score and pass the ball, calling him a “joyful passer.”

Seeing as Doncic stands 6’8 and weighing in at 230 pounds, he will be a nightmare of opposing defenses. Even though he is 6’8, Doncic was drafted as a point guard (he can play both guard positions) and can play the small forward position if need be.

He can spread the floor with his ability to score off the dribble and playmaking, so coupled with Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr.’s athleticism and driving ability, it will be beneficial for both of the young Mavericks. When talking about how Doncic and Smith Jr. will mesh, Carlisle said “it’s going to be a great fit both ways.”

Doncic is one of the most promising and decorated international players to be drafted into the NBA. He is the youngest player to win EuroLeague MVP and EuroLeague Finals MVP. Doncic joins Miami Heat guard Goran Dragic as the only Slovenian players in the league.
